The accused has been identified as Adit Jeetesh Dhawan, a resident of Andheri West.

According to the Marine Drive police, around 7.45 pm on Sunday, Dhawan’s car hit a biker on NS Road near Sunder Mahal junction. After apprehending that the biker might chase him, the car driver tried to flee.

Meanwhile, constable Dnyaneshwar Bodake, who was posted at the nearby signal, noticed that Dhawan’s car did not have a registration number plate on the front side and therefore asked the driver to stop the vehicle. Dhawan, however, ignored the signal and sped away.

When Bodake chased Dhawan on his motorbike, the 22-year-old threatened the constable and hit the motorcycle. “Bodake jumped on to another side and escaped with minor injuries. He was treated at GT Hospital,” a police officer said.

“Dhawan kept on driving his car and hit five to six vehicles. Bodake, meanwhile, informed the control room about the suspicious vehicle and all the police stations in south Mumbai were alerted,” a police officer from Marine Drive police station said.

The police then chased Dhawan’s vehicle and nabbed him at the end of JJ Flyover. “Dhawan has just completed a business administration course. He initially told us that his father is an MLA. Later, we learnt that his father who rents out excavators in Nagpur,” the police officer added.

“We suspect that Dhawan was drunk and took his blood samples. A girl was accompanying him in the car. Once the accused noticed the traffic cop, he got scared and hit a bike. To escape, he dashed into the traffic cop and later dashed into several other vehicles,” the police officer said, adding that he was travelling from Andheri to Marine Drive for a joyride.

Dhawan has been booked under section 307 (attempt to murder), 506-2 (criminal intimidation), 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty) and 427 (mischief causing damage to the amount of fifty rupees) of the Indian Penal Code as well as various sections of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988.
