A 22-year-old woman was killed and her cousin critically injured after the car they were travelling in with two others was allegedly struck from behind by a truck at the Chandgi Ram Akhara traffic signal on Ring Road in north Delhi around Sunday midnight, police said. The force of the collision was such that the car smashed into a loaded, stationary truck in front of it, police added.

The two others — the deceased’s mother and another cousin who was driving the car — escaped with minor bruises, the police said, adding that that the drivers of both the trucks fled the accident spot and were on the run till Monday night.

Deputy commissioner of police (north) Sagar Singh Kalsi said that the deceased, identified as Amandeep Kaur, a makeup artist, was returning to her residence in north Delhi’s Nehru Vihar along with her mother Pushpa, 52, and two cousins – Harminder Singh, 33, and Bunty, 30 — after visiting Sis Ganj Gurdwara in Chandni Chowk, when the mishap took place.

“A few minutes past midnight, the Civil Lines police station received a call regarding an accident at the Chandgi Ram Akhara traffic signal involving a Maruti A-Star car. A police team reached the accident spot and rescued the four occupants of the car. Two of them were badly injured and were admitted to the nearby Sushruta Trauma Centre, where the 22-year-old was declared brought dead,” said a police officer who was part of the team that rescued the victims.

The officer added that the car was moving behind a loaded truck on the carriageway towards Majnu Ka Tila on Ring Road. They stopped at the Chandgi Ram Akhara traffic signal when it turned red.

“Suddenly, another speeding truck going towards Azadpur Mandi crashed into the car from behind. The impact of the crash was such that the car’s front portion rammed the truck ahead of it while its rear portion was badly damaged,” said the officer, adding that maximum impact was felt on the left side of the vehicle where the deceased was seated.

DCP Kalsi said that a case of rash and negligent driving causing death and hurt was registered at the Civil Lines police station against the errant driver of the truck moving behind the car. The truck was confiscated.

“The driver is absconding. We have identified him. Raids are being conducted to nab him,” the officer added.
