50-yr-old killed, two injured in Santacruz hit-and-run, driver arrested
A cyclist was killed and two car occupants were injured after a speeding SUV crashed into them in Santacruz. The driver has been arrested.
MUMBAI: A 50-year-old cyclist was killed and two occupants of a car sustained severe injuries after a speeding SUV crashed into them in Santacruz on Sunday afternoon.
The police have arrested the driver, identified as ??? on Monday for causing death by negligence as well as for endangering their lives through rash action.
In a statement to the police, one of the injured persons, Devang Shah, 42, an IT professional, said he and his sister, Pooja, 37, were seated in their car parked outside a bookstore near the Podar School in Santacruz around 11am on Sunday.
“I saw a car speeding towards our direction. It first dashed into the cyclist and then crashed into our car from the front,” Shah told the police.
Despite being injured himself, Shah picked up the wounded cyclist, identified as Anant Yesu Sankhe, and drove him to a nearby private hospital. Sankhe was admitted to the emergency ward due to the grievous nature of his injuries, said an officer from the Santacruz police station. He later died at the hospital.
“When we registered the case on Sunday afternoon, we did not know the identity of the accused. We, therefore, registered the case against an unknown accused under sections 279 (rash and negligent driving), 304A (causing death by negligence) and 338 (endangering the lives of others through a rash action) of the Indian Penal Code,” said the official.
The police then got the number of the vehicle through CCTV cameras installed at the spot which led them to the accused. He was arrested on Monday afternoon and presented in court. He is currently in police custody.
