Several top colleges, including Shri Ram College of Commerce, St Stephen’s College, Hindu College, and Lady Shri Ram College have already closed admission to most of the courses that they offer.

Haneet Gandhi, dean of admissions, said of the 71,000 undergraduate seats on offer, 62,008 had been filled by Monday evening. She said the university shared the list of vacant seats on its admission website after the completion of the first round of allocations.

According to Gandhi, 40,701 students opted to “upgrade” their seats by Monday evening, while 12,733 students opted to “freeze” their admission. She added that the upgrade option will not be available for those who have been allocated their first preference of course and college.

Candidates who “upgrade” their seat will be considered for upgradation to a higher preference submitted by them, while candidates who submit a “freeze” request will no longer be taken into consideration for the following round of seat allocations.

Students have time till Tuesday to choose a higher preference, following which the second round of allocations will be done on Thursday, officials said.

A perusal of the list of vacant seats released by the university shows that Shri Ram College of Commerce, Hindu College, Miranda House, Ramjas College, Kirori Mal College, Hansraj College and St Stephen’s College have closed admissions in the general category for popular courses like BA (Hons) English, Economics, History, Political Science, and BCom (Hons).

Across colleges, the most admissions have taken place at Dyal Singh College, Hansraj College, Gargi College, Ramjas College, and Kirori Mal College. The most popular courses were BCom (Hons), BCom, BA (Hons) Political Science, BA (Hons) Economics, and BA (Hons) English.

However, some of these colleges have vacant seats in science courses. For instance, St Stephens has five vacant seats for BSc (Hons) Chemistry, seven for BSc (Hons) Physics, and two in BSc (Programme) physical science with computer science programme.

Ramjas, meanwhile, has 16 vacant seats for BSc (Hons) Physics, 16 for BSc (programme) Life Science, Chemistry, and eight for BSc (Hons) Zoology.

Hindu College has 11 vacant seats in BSc (Hons) Botany, seven in BSc (H) Chemistry, and 13 in BSc (H) Zoology. At Lady Shri Ram College for Women, the number of vacant seats in the unreserved category across all courses stands at 8.

Manoj Khanna, principal of Ramjas, said only a handful seats are still left at his college. “Most of the seats are filled. Only in science courses, around 10% of admissions are left. Earlier, it would take us at least four lists to arrive at the seat scenario that we are witnessing now after the first list,” said Khanna, saying that since the admission process was centralised, admissions were taking place in a systematic manner.
