Foundation stone laid for multi-crore makeover of Parel, Kanjurmarg, Vikhroli stations

Mumbai: Elegant buildings, ease of commute, aesthetic uplift of platforms, lifts, escalators etc., are some of the features of the multi-crore redevelopment plan for three stations of Parel, Kanjurmarg and Vikhroli on the Central Railway.

The preliminary designs for the same have been prepared by the rail authorities and were made public on Sunday when foundation stones were laid at these stations for the redevelopment.

These three are among the 15 railway stations in Mumbai on the Central Railway, which will undergo a revamp under the Amrit Bharat scheme.

According to the CR authorities, the cost of redeveloping the three stations is expected to be around 65 crore. Across the country, 508 stations, out of a total of 1,309 stations nominated, will be redeveloped in the first phase under this Amrit Bharat scheme.

On Sunday, foundation stones were laid at all these 508 stations.

Elaborating on what the makeover will bring to these three stations on the CR, a railway official said, “Easing commute, providing better passenger experience, building elegant stations are some of the things that we shall be doing.

“The new station building will redefine the station’s architectural landscape, reflecting a modern design. Under Swachh Bharat mission, we will introduce a modular sewage treatment plant, ensuring efficient sewage treatment,” added the official.

Other upgrades will include resurfacing and aesthetic uplift of platforms with the introduction of captivating landscaping on platform walls, better seating, drinking water facilities, and enhanced lighting and ventilation on platforms and within station building. Modernised train indication boards and passenger-friendly signages for seamless navigation, and improvements will be designed to be divyangjan (specially-abled) friendly.

In the Mumbai Suburban section of the CR; the stations of Byculla, Chinchpokli, Parel, Matunga, Kurla, Vidyavihar, Vikhroli, Kanjurmarg, Mumbra, Diva, Shahad, Titwala, Igatpuri, Wadala, and Sandhurst Road will see a massive makeover.

On the Western Railway, stations of Mumbai Central, Dadar, Charni Road, Grant Road, Malad, Borivali, Prabhadevi are some of the stations earmarked for redevelopment.
