Demolition cannot be the answer to encroachment

Data tells us that most housing in urban India is built in some degree of tension with the law. One study, by private consultancy FSG, uses census data to estimate that 33%-47% of housing in urban India is what they term informal. That’s one in every two or three houses

The civic body had declared the Shiv Mahal Society, on Mathuradas Road, Kandivali West, dangerous for habitation on August 25 and ordered its demolition. However, to the dismay of Devi Bhuvan Chawl residents, their nine houses were bulldozed by the developer, rendering them homeless, on December 19. (HT PHOTO)

Fighting the odds

That Siras had to undergo trauma, fear, harassment and humiliation in his own university in what would turn out to be his last weeks is condemnable. If these events and that trauma are in any way linked to his death, then all actors involved must be held culpable.
