The Capital’s third waste-to-art theme park, conceptualised last year to mark 75 years of Independence, is set for inauguration on Tuesday, Municipal Corporation of Delhi officials aware of the matter said.
Shaheedi Park, located at Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg, has been built at a cost of around ₹16.5 crore and has utilised 250 tonnes of scrap material to feature galleries and sculptures that showcase Indian freedom struggle, officials said.
A municipal official said that lieutenant governor VK Saxena has been invited as the chief guest for its inauguration, while chief minister Arvind Kejriwal will be the special guest at the opening of the park, which was conceptualised last year to mark 75 years of Independence. Built at a cost of around ₹16.5 crore, the park has utilised 250 tonnes of scrap material to feature galleries and sculptures that showcase Indian freedom struggle
The entry ticket for the park will be ₹100 for adults and ₹50 for children, officials said.
An MCD official overseeing the project said that the park has been branded as “country’s first open air museum park” which will not only act as a recreational space but will also provide educational experiences. “It is a tribute to heroes of the freedom struggle and while walking along the pathways laid in the middle of 56,000 plants and shrubs, the users will be able to witness the chronological story of developments in India,” the official said.
At the park, MCD has developed an amphitheatre where light and sound shows will be held, while an audio tour is also under development, the official said. “The theme of these shows will be based on nationalism and the story of Indian independence. We are also setting up a children’s play zone and a food court at one end of the facility,” the official added.
This will be the third waste-to-art themed park in the city after the Waste to Wonder park at Sarai Kale Khan and the Bharat Darshan Park at Punjabi Bagh, which feature replicas of the seven wonders of the world, and Indian heritage monuments, respectively. The corporation is also planning to develop a dinosaur themed park and a Bollywood park on similar themes.
