Gunther has held the Intercontinental title for over 400 days and will have to remain undefeated till September 7 to surpass The Honky Tonk Man’s record.

WWE Intercontinental Champion Gunther is nearing The Honky Tonk Man's record as the longest-reigning winner in the competition. However, the 35-year-old wrestler does not believe that an on-screen interaction with the legend would benefit anyone involved. Gunther made the comments in a recent interview with Metro UK.

The Austrian professional wrestler feels that The Honky Tonk Man has had his time. The Intercontinental champion also confessed that he has a very different presentation style and the onscreen meeting would not work out for this reason.

Gunther closer to Intercontinental Champion record

Gunther has held the Intercontinental Champion title for over 400 days. If he wants to surpass The Honky Tonk Man’s historic 453-day reign, he will have to remain undefeated till September 7.

Answering a question about a match of the segment with The Honky Tonk Man, Gunther said: “No, I don’t think so. I think he had his time, he’s still got the record – it’s not broken, we will see what happens.”

The Ring General added that he and the 70-year-old WWE star have been presented very differently.

“I think I operate on a different level than him when it comes to what we do in the ring,” adding, “I think my presentation’s very different, and also how I carry myself. I think it would just not be a good fit. I don’t think anybody would benefit from that,” explained Gunther.

What’s next for Gunther?

All eyes will be on whether the Austrian professional wrestler is able to maintain his dominance in WWE RAW in the coming weeks. If he stands undefeated till the next month, Gunther will surpass The Honky Tonk Man as the longest Intercontinental Champion.
