Use greener buses on NCR routes from Nov 1, CAQM urges states

The Commission for Air Quality Management has directed states running buses in Delhi and the National Capital Region to phase out older buses and ensure that only those running on CNG, electric power, or conforming to BS-VI emission norms operate from November 1. The curbs aim to reduce air pollution during the period when air quality is typically at its worst due to calm pre-winter weather and farm fires. The commission has set deadlines of June 2026 and June 2028 for states to transition their bus fleets to electric and CNG power.

The curbs, by the panel that has the legal prerogative to take steps in order to reduce air pollution, will come into effect around the time when air quality typically plunges to its worst levels due to calm pre-winter weather and farm fires. (PTI)

Heaviest July rain in 21 years floods Delhi

Delhi experienced its heaviest rainfall for a July day in 21 years, causing chaos on the streets. The India Meteorological Department issued a red alert, and the Delhi Traffic Police reported waterlogging at 56 locations and fallen trees blocking several stretches. The heavy rain was a result of monsoon winds interacting with a western disturbance. The city's lack of preparedness for the monsoon season is concerning, especially as it aims to become a world-class city. More rain is expected in the coming days.

Aim to make Yamuna clean, fully navigable soon, says Delhi LG

Lieutenant governor VK Saxena and NGT chairperson Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel inspected an 11km stretch of the Yamuna river in Delhi to assess its navigability. They stated that involving citizens at a physical level with the river will help with its rejuvenation. The Indian Navy had previously conducted a navigability assessment, revealing a depth range of 0.9m to 4m. Efforts to desilt and trap sewage on the Najafgarh drain, which accounts for 68% of the river's pollution, have shown improvement. However, maintaining sufficient water flow throughout the year is necessary for the project's success.
