The Maharashtra University of Health Sciences (MUHS) has approved 1,000 additional seats in eight medical colleges after the seats were initially missing from the first round of selection list for the state Common Entrance Test (CET). These seats will now be available in the second round, raising hopes for students to get into their preferred colleges. Some students are demanding a reallocation of seats from the first round.

Mumbai: Two days after students and parents voiced their anguish over missing undergraduate (UG) seats in the first round of selection list of the state Common Entrance Test (CET) cell, the Maharashtra University of Health Sciences (MUHS) on Monday gave approval to 1,000 seats in eight medical colleges.

The seats that were missing in round one will now be available in round two, raising students’ hopes of getting their preferred college.

On August 4, the state CET cell released its round one selection list for medical courses. However, it was discovered that almost 1,000 medical seats were missing, causing confusion and chaos among aspiring students.

These seats were added to the seat matrix released by the state’s CET cell last week and therefore, students opted for them while filling out their choices. The seat matrix provides information about vacant seats in the respective colleges.

Dr Milind Nikumbh, pro vice-chancellor, MUHS, said, “Queries regarding their affiliation rose due to insufficient number of teachers in the eight colleges. Representatives of the colleges submitted an undertaking to the MUHS stating that they will address all queries as soon as possible. The MUHS has given affiliation to the said colleges keeping in mind the interest of the students.”

Following this, the state CET cell also released a circular stating that the 1,000 seats will be available in round two. Brijesh Sutaria, parent of a student, said, “This is a good decision by the MUHS, but many students fear that they have lost their chance in round one due to these seats not being allotted. So, we are demanding a reallocation of round one.”
