Wadia hospital to start paediatric heart transplant programme

Mumbai's Bai Jerbai Wadia Hospital for Children plans to start a heart transplant programme to address the challenges faced by children with congenital heart disease. The hospital already has a liver and kidney transplant programme, but the addition of a heart transplant programme will provide essential healthcare services to patients in need. However, there are challenges such as the high cost of surgery and a lack of awareness about organ donation that still need to be addressed.

1,033 cr due from Videocon Group not wrongful loss: Bank

HC directs state-run, BMC-run medical colleges to return documents of 76 students

The Bombay High Court has directed state-run and civic medical colleges in Maharashtra to return the documents of 76 students of various super-speciality courses. The court stated that educational institutions do not have a special lien over the documents.

1,000 seats in medical UG courses were not allotted

The state CET cell in Mumbai released its round one selection list for the undergraduate medical course, but almost 1,000 seats were missing. These seats were initially included in the seat matrix but were excluded due to a lack of approval from the Maharashtra University of Health Sciences. Students and parents are demanding that the round be declared invalid and that the seats be included in future rounds. The CET cell has stated that the seats will be considered in subsequent rounds once the necessary permissions are received.

73-yr-old man gets 3-year jail term for molesting schoolgirls in 2016

A 73-year-old man in Mumbai has been sentenced to three years in prison for molesting minor girls. The accused was arrested after the girls followed him home and called the police. The man, who once worked as an actor, claimed he was falsely implicated in the case. The court, however, found him guilty based on the prompt reporting of the incident and the girls' testimony. The court showed leniency due to the man's old age and health conditions.

One mobile number linked to 5,019 applications, finds CAG audit of DBT schemes

An audit of India's Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) scheme found irregularities, including fake caste certificates and ineligible applicants receiving scholarships. The Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) report also criticised the lack of monitoring to ensure scholarship benefits were reaching eligible applicants. The CAG recommended data verification through biometric attendance and cross-verification of income claims using registered mobile numbers. The DBT scheme aims to eliminate intermediaries and improve the delivery of benefits such as scholarships, wage payments, and subsidies.

Prime govt plot at Juhu sought to be monetised by BSNL

According to the notification issued on July 31, the land near BSNL wireless station, next to Podar International School in Santacruz, already has government buildings, staff quarters and an existing office on part of the land and “(since these) are being used for the designated purpose as shown in the said Development Plan, the applicant’s request regarding deletion of the said designations for that portion of land cannot be considered”

ED carries out searches in 205-cr cheating case

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) conducted searches in Mumbai and Kerala linked to a firm and its proprietor in a money-laundering investigation related to fraudulent collection of money from emigrants. The accused allegedly recruited nurses for the Ministry of Health, Kuwait, using a license fraudulently obtained from the Indian government, making a total of ₹205.71 crore. Several bank accounts with ₹76 lakh and documents of immovable properties worth ₹12 crore were seized.

Council passes confidence motion on Gorhe, Sena (UBT) says no such provision in rule book

Members of the ruling government and Shiv Sena engaged in a heated debate in the legislative council over a confidence motion for deputy chairperson Neelam Gorhe. The motion was passed by voice vote, leaving Sena members shocked. Later, Sena objected to the motion, stating that there is no provision for such motions in the council. Parliamentary affairs minister Chandrakant Patil stated that as a confidence motion has been passed, no no-confidence motion can be moved against Gorhe for the next year. The government will form a committee to select a senior member to hear and decide on Gorhe's disqualification.

Oshiwara rape-and-murder: Possibility of planting evidence can’t be ruled out: Court acquits watchman

A sessions court in Mumbai has cleared a watchman of charges of raping and murdering a 74-year-old resident, citing illegal detention and possible evidence planting. The court concluded that the prosecution had failed to prove the charges against the accused, Mohammed Rafi. The defence argued that Rafi was illegally detained by the police for 15 days, during which time evidence may have been planted. The court accepted this defence and rejected the prosecution's claim that Rafi targeted the woman out of fear of losing his job.

Housing societies and schools join fight against plastic waste

Students at Navy Public School in Colaba have taken an oath to segregate and recycle their plastic waste, with the support of the surrounding Navy Nagar buildings. The initiative is part of the monthly Plastic Recyclothon organized by NGO Project Mumbai, which aims to change people's attitudes towards single-use plastic. Other building collectives, corporates, and schools across the city are also participating in the initiative. The Rotary Club of Mumbai Lakers in Powai has been collecting low-grade and multi-layer plastic for recycling since 2020, collecting 25 tons so far. Project Mumbai funds the plastic collection and recycling through CSR initiatives.
