Tennis Schedule 2023

The tennis season starts with a set of hard-court tournaments across Asia and Australia in January and February, including team events such as the United Cup, with the Australian Open in Melbourne as the showpiece event of the first leg of the season. The tours then move to South America for a mix of hard court and clay court events, before the “Sunshine Double” of the 1000-level events in Indian Wells and Miami in the USA, the first two 1000-level tournaments of the season and also the largest.

The clay court swing begins in April, with big tournaments on the European clay, as well as the qualifier stage for the Billie Jean King Cup. Both tours have 1000-level events in Madrid and Rome, while the ATP tour also has a Masters tournament in Monte Carlo. Two months of clay court preparation end with Roland Garros in Paris in June. There is a very brief month of grasscourt tournaments, used largely as a warmup to Wimbledon, the most prestigious tournament of the season, which occurs in two weeks in July during the British summer.

An intense summer of tennis is followed by a brief break for the top players, followed by the North American hardcourt swing. Both tours play 1000-level events in Canada, the ATP playing odd years in Toronto and even years in Montreal, and the other way around for the WTA tour. This is followed by the Cincinnati 1000-event, and then the US Open in New York in September. September also sees the group stage for the Davis Cup, as well as the Laver Cup. The WTA has 1000-level events on hard courts in Guadalajara and Beijing, while the ATP has 1000-level events in Shanghai and Paris.

The season ends in the WTA with the WTA Finals, taking place in Shenzhen this year. On the men’s side, Turin will host the ATP Finals in November as well. These events see the 8 players with the most ranking points on each tour compete in a marquee end-of-year round robin event, considered to be the fifth-biggest trophy of the year. The Billie Jean King Cup and Davis Cup knockouts and finals will take place in November with the city of Malaga in Spain acting as hosts for both, bringing the tennis season to a close.
