Sunrisers Hyderabad part ways with Brian Lara after bottom-place finish in IPL 2023, ex-RCB coach named replacement
Former champions Sunrisers Hyderabad have parted ways with Brian Lara after a bottom-place finish in IPL 2023.
Former champions Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) have decided to part ways with head coach Brian Lara after a disastrous season in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023. Champions in the 2016 edition of the cash-rich league, the Orange Army finished 10th in the 10-team tournament last season. On Monday, the Hyderabad-based franchise confirmed the departure of the legendary West Indies cricketer from the SRH camp.
Former West Indies skipper Lara had succeeded ex-Australian cricketer Tom Moody as the head coach of Sunrisers Hyderabad in the lead-up to the IPL season 2023. Lara was roped in as Hyderabad’s batting coach and strategic advisor for IPL 2022. The Hyderabad giants finished eighth after losing eight games in the 2022 season of the T20 league.
Though Lara replaced Moody as head coach of the Hyderabad franchise, the batting legend failed to spark a turnaround at the SRH camp in IPL 2023. After finishing eighth in the 2021 and 2022 seasons of the elite tournament, Sunrisers Hyderabad finished with a wooden spoon in IPL 2023.
Vettori named new SRH head coach
Parting ways with Lara after a disappointing season, SRH have also confirmed the appointment of former New Zealand skipper Daniel Vettori as the head coach of the Hyderabad franchise. Vettori, who was the head coach of Virat Kohli-starrer Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) side from 2014 to 2018, is currently coaching the Birmingham Phoenix side at the Hundred.
Under ex-RCB head coach Vettori, Bangalore made it to the playoffs in 2015. Kohli-led RCB also contested the IPL 2016 final under Vettori's watch. The former New Zealand skipper has worked as a bowling consultant with Bangladesh. Vettori has been associated with Australia's national side since May 2022.
Vettori is the fourth head coach that Sunrisers Hyderabad have appointed in six seasons after Moody (2019 and 2022), Trevor Bayliss (2020 and 2021), and Lara (2023). Former IPL winners SRH last made it to the playoffs in 2020. SRH only recorded four wins in IPL last season.
